About the Team
We are a student-led competitive sailing team made up of 28 undergraduate students from McGill University. We are currently ranked second in CICSA (Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association) and 21st in NEISA (New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association).
Our fall season runs from September to early November. During this time, we participate in regattas in two different racing circuits – NEISA and CICSA. We train in a fleet of 12 420s that we fundraised for and purchased in 2016, using sails that we purchased in 2019. Most of our racing is done in double handed boats, such as 420s and FJs, but we also race in a couple of keelboat and singlehanded events. Each sailor participates in a minimum of two regattas.
During the season, we run practices Monday through Thursday. Sailors leave the downtown campus at 2:30 pm or meet at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club at 3:30 and sail until sunset. Each sailor attends at least two practices per week. Sailors join the team as either a skipper or a crew depending on skill level and preference and are partnered with another sailor for the whole season. Outside of the season, we have mandatory workouts two mornings a week (follow us on Instagram to see how we’re keeping in shape!).
Social events are also an important part of life on the team. Throughout the year, we have fundraisers, “family nights,” and a ski trip in early January. We stay active and competitive by playing intramural sports such as ice hockey and water polo, and by racing in Florida and New England in keelboat, fleet race, and team race regattas.
